Background
Born to Lainínen of Sliver Ridge and Arassë of Forgotten Glade, Adurant’s very existence was touch and go for a while. Plainly speaking, his parents could not stand one and other when they first met seeing, as their personalities were as different as night and day. Lainínen could never seem to get his head out of his books and studies. He had no taste for fighting and thought war was a needless and wasteful activity. Such opinions, and Lainínen made no secret of them, caused Arassë to be disgusted with him. She came from a long line of Elven warriors and took such opinions to be a personal insult. In her turn, she thought him a weakling and was very glad that he was male and would not take the throne of Nu'ada. Despite all of this however, it was pride that kept Lainínen and Arassë together. She was determined to be professional and stalwart even if it killed her, while Lainínen refused to let it be known to the general public that there were problems between him and his personal guard by requesting for changes to be made.
However, pride and pigheadedness were not the only things that prince and personal guard had in common.
Not content with the libraries at Sliver Ridge, Lainínen had a habit of traveling the land. During many of the journeys between village to village, Arassë was his only company. Over time, they struck up an uneasy friendship and through this discovered that both their magics were rooted in water. This was a happy discovery for Lainínen, who had committed his life to the study of Elven magic and he would often ask Arassë for demonstrations, fascinated that the aspect of her magic was very different from his own even though they both communed with the same element. After this discovery, their friendship flourished and soon everybody could see that there was the spark of something else between them. It was probably because of this that one of Lainínen’s close friends suggested that he take a trip to Golden Lily Cove. With all the other courting couples flooding the cove, something was bound to catch. Adurant himself suspects that he was conceived there.
He was born in Sliver Ridge however, raised by his father’s people and various servants. Adurant grew up knowing all about his heritage, and of course where he stood, being the first grandchild of the ruling Queen. His childhood was a rather carefree one and you could say that Adurant was spoiled by the indulgence of his minders. He was a royal and was given everything that he could ask for, but on top of that, he was male and therefore was not burdened by the responsibilities of someday taking the throne. Adurant’s days were filled with fun rather then studies though there were times when his mother would put her foot down and step in. Noble blood or not, she was not going to let her son grow up into a blue-blooded airhead. As he matured, it became apparent where Adurant’s interests lay. To the surprise of many, he was not a scholar like his father or a warrior like his mother; instead, Adurant gravitated to the arts and entertainment. Whenever a band of players were in Sliver Ridge, you could be sure that Adurant was there as well. He had a knack for poetry and storytelling, his own innate charisma drawing people to him.
His father was amused by this development, his mother worried. At first Arassë tried to dissuade her son from his pursuits, but Adurant did not take too kindly at having his interests being called trivial and useless. He rebelled, becoming estranged from his parents. Deciding that he needed time away from the capital city, Adurant took to traveling; he joined up with a band of players and would stay with them for the next five years.
It took the birth of his little sister to make Adurant return to Sliver Ridge. He had heard that the birth had been hard on his mother and knew that his father would be beside himself with worry. Adurant came to show his support, and intended to leave again though this plan was destroyed when he was introduced to his infant sister. It was the first time that Adurant felt protective of someone else other then himself or his interests. The strong bond that he would share with his sister would lead to mending the rift that had formed between Adurant and his parents. It would also lead him to taking his studies more seriously. Presently, Adurant is once against living in Sliver Ridge, and studying under the tutelage of his father.
Physical Appearance
Anyone looking at Adurant will have no doubt that he is an elf. Like most of his kind, he is tall and slim, with skin as pale as moonshine. People have long commented that Adurant has inherited his father’s looks and this is not just the slim nose and regal cheekbones of the Sliver Ridge line. He has also inherited Lainínen’s eyes, a deep and dark blue like twin pools at twilight, and most of his father’s expressions as well. It has been commented that when Adurant is in a thoughtful mood the set of his face and the look in his eyes echo Lainínen perfectly. His hair though, is a different story and entirely his mother’s legacy. A deep red, shot through with strands of gold, Adurant’s hair is as straight and wispy as Arassë and brings to mind a fiery sunset.
As far as clothes go, Adurant prefers function then anything overly fanciful. The stress to that sentence is of course the word overly. Adurant certainly would not say no to expensive clothes or ornate embroidery on the collars or the edges of his tunics. He is a prince and is of the mind set that everyone should know it. His clothes are usually of dark colors such as dark blues and greens.
Personality
Somebody who does not know Adurant very well will say that personality-wise he is unlike his father and his mother. Primarily, Adurant comes off as a fun loving and carefree spirit. He is indulgent to the point of fault and it would seem that he would rather waste the hours with entertainment then doing anything of use.
However, since the birth of his younger sister and his reconciliation with his parents, Adurant has been trying to shoulder more responsibility. He is actually struggling with it in fact, since this goes against years and years of having his own selfish wants and needs met almost without question. Nevertheless, he is determined to be of use to his family and this is when the good points of Adurant’s personality shine through. He proves himself loyal and has the capacity to be compassionate and caring towards others. This is especially shown in his interactions with his sister. Like his parents, Adurant is no push over. He is stubborn in the extreme and will not budge when he dig his heels in over something. Adurant is an elf of strong convictions and will fight for his beliefs; he proves himself to have a rather sharp tongue and is able to hold his own in a debate.
Talents
As stated, Adurant has an innate charisma that draws people to him. This makes it very easy for him to make friends socially network. Often he uses this to his advantage because it is easier to get things done when you have more friends then enemies. He has a knack for storytelling and in turn is a very stirring public speaker. People cannot help but listen to Adurant and he has a talent for putting a spin on just about anything. A wordsmith with something of a sliver tongue, Adurant is able to catch people’s attention and imagination with his speeches and stories.
As both his parents have a connection to water, it is no surprise that Adurant has inherited this as well. He has proved that he is very competent with using the element, going so far as to make river rapids do his bidding. Adurant has also been known to receive visions of the future in still pools of water. There is also the rumor that he can communicate with fish, though this is generally met with amusement from Adurant.
Weaknesses
Try as he might to be the mature prince, Adurant is still very much prone to being a huge brat. He is notorious for his mood swings and has a very short fuse when it comes to stupid mistakes. It is often the servants who have to bare the bite of his anger, and though he has never raised a hand to any of them, Adurant can be very cruel verbally. He is also infamous for sending servants who had angered him on strange and impossible errands.
While Adurant may seem to have a strong bond with his element, there are some drawbacks as well. For instance he works better with white water rapids when a placid river. Since he has to expand his own energy to create these waves, he will be very weak at the end of it. Water pollution has also been known to make Adurant ill. He cannot spend time near a polluted body of water nor can he manipulate it with his magic. As for getting visions in water, both the element and the future are wily and ever changing, Adurant if what he sees is correct or has already been altered by the choices of others.
Opinion of the Peace Treaties
Adurant is in two minds about the idea of a peace treaty. On one hand, he is cautious of the true motives of the Imperials and fears that they will overrun and ruin the lush lands of Nu'ada. Imperials have never shown themselves to be anything but wasteful and dismissive when it comes to matters of the environment after all. On the other hand, he finds that the opportunity to study Imperial magic is a very tempting one indeed. He has not voiced this to anyone, but as soon as the treaty is finalized, Adurant has made plans to travel and interview the first Imperial mage he meets up with. But two minds or not, Adurant does not understand why marriage has to be involved in the treaty. Like any elf, he does not put much stock in ‘marriage’ and thinks that it is an entirely different animal then the subject of peace. He does feel a measure of pity for the noble girl set to marry his uncle, since she is in for quite a culture shock.
