Background
Tristan was born to Ella Stratford and Theodore Gray. They had met several times as children, their covens were friendly with each other and co-owned a house in London. Both covens moved around a lot, often traveling for monthes at a time, and as such the children in both covens were home schooled. By the time that Ella and Theodore had become a couple everyone viewed it as inevitable, and though the two covens shared the single London house they weren’t ever together. The night after Tristan was conceived, Ella and Theodore were called to their respected coven’s homes, both in different parts of the countryside. There had been a rash of supernatural deaths in London and the rumors were that a particularly clever hunter group had settled down in London.
Ella continued in the pregnancy and her coven members supported her. The coven leader only ever ventured out to collect food and everyone stayed pretty close to home. When he was born she called Theodore and told him about their child. It had been nine monthes since they had talked and the threat of hunters was still prevalent in London, but no one in the towns near her coven had been having any sort of problems. She told Theodore to come visit and he agreed, explaining briefly to his own coven leader before setting out. When they finally saw each other it was like angels were blowing trumpets again. The thing was that even one person who is in love with anyone, to an empath is like crack, and so for both of them to be in love with each other, was an addiction. Theodore pretty much spent the next 11 years traveling between his own coven’s house and Ella and Tristan, wherever they happened be at the time.
Though Theodore’s coven stopped moving and had pretty much stayed centrally located out of the single house since the scare, Ella’s coven was not as easily deterred and they were constantly changing places. Tristan was being educated in normal school topics, but also in various things that would later help him as a witch. For one he was taught to read Tarot Cards, and he was also taught that it was better to hide your gift, whatever it happened to be (although from birth people had been referencing Tristan’s future gift as an empathy) then to use it too often and get killed because of it.
The year that Tristan turned 12 he got his gift, It was right after his first major growth spurt. He had been playing a game with the other children, “hunter and witches” similar to tag except that once you got tagged you had to stop moving and the hunter had to catch all the other children. Tristan was being one of the witches and when the rest of the kids were running around he had ducked behind a large bush to take a breather. It was then that he felt the anger and fear radiating from inside the house they were staying in for the monthe.
He felt his heart begin to race and he doubled over, dry heaving at the raw emotions coursing through his body. He felt on of the kids running in front of his hiding place, pausing in front of the bush and he felt their joy fill his body, pushing the fear away, he stood slowly, walking from behind the bush to stand next to the other kid. He must of looked a complete mess, because the smaller child looked up at him and his spirits fell immediately. It wasn’t as bad as the emotion that had started the whole thing, but it was still less good.
It was then that he felt his mother wrap her arms around him, and he felt her love for him in his bones. The fear was only the rough edge of her love for him, and for that he was grateful. It wasn’t until later that night that she explained to him what was happening. He had finally come into his powers and she had just found out that the hunters were keen to their location. Any of the children with parents in other covens were being sent to that parent, along with some of the best friends of those children. The rest of the coven was moving quickly, so as to hopefully lose the hunters.
Theodore picked him up the next day, taking him back to his coven. Tristan was extremely quiet the whole train ride, and Theodore’s arm around him only did so much when he was so closely packed with so many people. The first day with the rest of his new coven was also awkward; as Tristan could not help but feel what they were feeling, curious, but tainted with a slight unrest and concern.
The next day his father began to train him to block off his mind. He had a very potent gift, most likely because both of his parents were empaths of somewhat medium strength, but his ability to block off the emotions was very small.
When he finally turned 18, he left the clan with his father’s blessing. He was to attend college. Before he got on the bus with his two duffle bags and his back pack his father stopped him and handed him a letter and two small boxes. The letter was from his mother, telling him that she was still alive and that he was going to do wonderfully at whatever he wanted to do. The tinier of the two boxes contained a silver pocket watch engraved on the front with an ornate heart with a T in the middle. The other box contained money from her that she had apparently been saving to give to him.
The day he arrived in Reading he followed his fathers last advice, which was to seek out the coven in the town. He was upset to discover that they already had an empath and so he started his own, figuring that there would be other witches in the town that didn’t have anywhere to go. It was on the day that he officially started the coven that he got his first tattoo. It was a picture of a king holding two cups, with a magpie on his shoulder, signifying the king of cups from the tarot cards, and the magpie for his new coven.
Physical Appearance
Tristan has light blond hair that is longish. His eyes are light blue and his lashes long. His features are delicate. His skin is pale, almost luminescent and he doesn’t tan. He is tall, standing at 6’3”, and he is thin, not made for sports or physical activity at all. His smile is gentle and many a human have described it as understanding, though none of them know quite how well he understands.
He often dresses with khakis or black pants and a funky shirt, along with a olive green fedora that he started wearing when he was 16ish. He always has his silver pocket watch with him, a reminder that his mother is still alive and still cares for him. He smells of the fresh dove soap that he almost obsessively scrubs with.
Personality
Tristan is a somber individual, despite the constant bombardment of his emotions. He was taught from his mother and father both that any sort of revealing of his power might lead to him being a target. Instead he shows as little as he can manage all the time.
He is reserved and quiet, so the fact that he is a leader might be surprising to an outsider, but when he is with his coven he can be loud and he knows how to make himself seem the authority. He also knows how to listen to what people have to say. He is also fiercely loyal to his coven. He views them as his brothers and sisters, probably because growing up he was taught that the whole coven was his family and that they had the same authority as either of his parents. He views the bonds created between coven mates as something that is sacred almost.
He is not rational at all, most likely because where most people only have to think past their own emotions, he has to think past everyone else’s. He tries to be rational but often he ends up following his heart (or another’s heart) rather then thinking things through.
He tends to be over generous. It is hard for him to say no, especially when negative emotions are genuine. This means that with a little work it is very easy to manipulate him into doing things for you, which is a trait his close friends know about and can either warn him of or take advantage of. If it is a serious issue, however, or one that will affect his entire coven, he will consider them before he gives too much.
His whole attitude, of being overly sensitive and caring, most of the time just makes humans or people who don’t know what his power is to feel awkward around him. They can tell that for some reason he really does understand, or at least he thinks he understands.
Talents & Weaknesses
Tristan’s power in empathy is stronger then both of his parents, and is over all a strong empath. He can feel the main emotion, along with details, and in order to feel the emotion he doesn’t just get an aura or a wave of it, but the entire time that person is within five or so feet he also feels the emotion. That is unless he actually works to block the emotion off from what he is actually feeling. This is possible for him, but only with small groups of people (four or five) and only for so long. If the emotion is extremely strong (like suicidal depression, gut wrenching terror, or true love) he will feel it from farther away in large waves, but not as consistently as he feels close emotions.
Although he is a strong empath, his other magical abilities are surprisingly limited. In fact, the only other magical thing he can manage is reading tarot cards.. It isn’t that he hadn’t tried to do other things, but the only thing that has turned out well enough for him to say that he has any skill in it is Tarot reading. If he wants to do anything else, he generally recruits one of the members of his coven to help him out.
He is fairly intelligent, and he can deal with the math and science well enough to get by, but his passion is in reading people and in getting to know people, something that he can do better then most. He hasn’t really stood out in any sort of academic way, so he is only slightly above average. He does recognize that other people are smarter than him, but will not concede defeat if the topic is anything to do with psychology or emotions.
He is not athletic at all. He can’t dance, or run, or swim. In fact, of all the children in his mother’s coven, he was always picked last for team sports. Because of this he prefers to blend into the background as far as getting away from people goes.
Because his mother gave him a gift of money, and his father matched what his mother gave him, he had been pretty good as far as finances go.. He is getting close to the end of his funds though and knows that he will most likely need to get a job soon. Because of this whenever anyone else wants to do anything concerning money, he is often inclined to decline.
