Background

Born in a small suburb off the outskirts of Melbourne to Claire and Alexander Mills, a couple clearly no longer suited, Ranik, an only child, quickly became accustomed to the sound of constant arguing. When he was five, worried about the effects on their child, who despite being a product of the marriage was well loved by both his parents, the couple divorced, Alexander moving across the world to England. Unaffected by the disruption in his life, Ranik had what he considers to be a very happy childhood. The next few years were spent with his mother, as well as with many of the neighbors in his apartment block, who gladly babysat the young boy while his mother, a nurse, was at work. It was through his constant association with different people that made Ranik the open and friendly person he is today. Throughout the years, he remained in close contact with his father. His mother remarried when he was 10, to an accountant named James Woodford. Although he got along with his stepfather so well he considered him a second father, when he was fourteen, Ranik decided it was time to get to know his real father more, who had remained single since the divorce. That year, to the sorrow of his mother, he moved to England.

Although Ranik loved living in England with his father, and got along with him well, he quickly developed a rebellious streak. He went through the phases so many other teenagers had done before him, he fell into the wrong crowd, did drugs, drank far too much and committed some minor felonies. Alexander, sometimes at a loss as to how to control his wayward son, tried to keep Ranik at bay by enrolling him in mixed martial arts classes as well as guitar lessons, and insisted he take extra classes on at school, trying to keep him busy. Though Ranik excelled at all these pursuits, and enjoyed them fully, he still managed to find time for his old habits. Though smart about what he did and where, he still managed to offend the wrong people, though his charm or fighting skills usually got him out of too much trouble.

One time however, just before his 18th birthday, his harm and fighting skills both failed him. He turned down the attentions of a local woman, who, considering it to be an insult; mainly due to a few comments Ranik had said during his rejection, enlisted her brother and a fellow friend, both mean fighters with prior grudges against the teenager, to help her shown him just what a mistake he made. That night, when he left a pub a little worse for wear, he was set upon the three in an alley he turned down for a shortcut. In his drunken state he got in a few blows, but with his lack of balance he was easily overpowered and forced him to the ground. The next few moments were a blow of punches and kicks, a bleeding nose and bruised rib cage. Just when he felt as though he might lose consciousness, he was saved, a moment he still looks back on with some disgust, by a girl around his age, shooting fireballs from her hand. He was drunk, but he knew he wasn’t seeing things, and as the girl dealt with his attackers, he huddled up against the nearest wall, watching in horror. When the girl turned to him, although she had her arm outstretched to help, fear stabbed at his heart. Though there was no love lost for his attackers, he saw what that girl did and knew that shouldn’t be done to another human, no matter the grudge. Forcing himself to his feet, Ranik quickly turned and fled from his savior, turning back once to glare at her in hate, committing her face to memory.

That night was the turning point of his life. Arriving home that night, though he didn’t think his father would believe him, he confessed what he saw. To his surprise, his father not only believed him but put him in touch with Conrad Mills, a middle-aged Hunter that Alexander had met long before his son had joined him. Taking the teen under his wing, Conrad explained how the world really was and offered to train Ranik to become a Hunter, to fight back against all the monsters that plagued the world. Ranik accepted the responsibility without hesitation, turning his back on his old life. He threw himself into both his studies and training, learning everything he could from his mentor and any other Hunters he crossed paths with; devoting himself to doing anything he could to help the Hunters.

After a year with Conrad, having quickly proved his worth and notching up a few kills, his mentor suggested that Ranik join up with another group of Hunters, led by Charlie Macintosh, thinking Ranik would be an asset to the group. Ranik gladly followed the recommendation, joining the Hunters and has spent the last year or so fighting under Charlie’s orders, following him to wherever he’s needed, eventually to Manchester then Reading.

Physical Appearance

Standing at 6’, with the lean and muscular body of a fighter, Ranik is well aware of the attention he can get from some women, but generally doesn’t go to any effort. He doesn’t pay too much attention to his general appearance, besides a regular shave and semi-regular haircuts. He keeps his dark brown hair short, but he sometimes forgets to get it cut and lets it grow out. He takes care of himself, exercising and training almost daily, but does it more to keep himself fit than for any health or appearance reasons.

With his grey eyes, and a faded scar reaching from just below his right ear to his chin, as well as a long diagonal scar starting from his upper chest and ending at his waist, at first glance he can be quite intimidating, which is far from the truth when it comes to humans. He isn’t often seen without a smile on his face. He has a barbed wire tattoo on his right upper arm, an act of rebellion when he was a teen, and one of an eagle with wings outstretched on his left shoulder blade.

When it comes to clothes, Ranik is far from interested. He can get dressed up if the need to arises, but generally dresses for practicality rather than fashion, sticking often to jeans, combat pants, boots and wifebeaters.

Personality

Laid back, friendly, confident, charming and open are the best words to describe the Hunter. He is usually friendly to all he meets, and genuinely interested in other people, with the result being many friends and fairly few enemies. He gets along with most people and although he realises not everyone is willing to be as open straight away, is very patient and when people let their guard down, he is a loyal and trusted friend. He would never betray another person, be it a Hunter or other human, no matter the danger to himself.

Rank has a strong belief system when it comes to right and wrong. As well as everything not human, he has a severe dislike of racism, sexism and homophobic tendencies, and will not tolerate these traits in other people. He also has little affection for those who look down on others, due to money or other issues and people, though mainly women, who concentrate solely on their appearance as though it is the most important thing in the world. He has great admiration for those who are outside of the norm, who don’t follow the general rules of society just to fit in and those who live as they see fit. He himself is attracted to women who are slightly different, unique and he has a soft spot for intelligence and piercings. Although he is well aware that the option is available to him if he wants it, he has never understood the appeal of flings, preferring a steady relationship. Though he can hide it well, he can be nervous when it comes to women he generally likes and because of this, is sometimes slow to make the first move.

When it comes to the Hunters, Ranik is extremely loyal and protective. He would do whatever it takes for Charlie and his team, often volunteering himself for the most dangerous jobs with little thought. Though laid back, when a fellow Hunter is threatened, Ranik can become very aggressive and violent. He is headstrong and stubborn at times, and though he usually follows orders without question, if he feels someone is wrong, he is not afraid to speak his mind, sometimes leading to conflicts between himself and other Hunters. He mostly believes that what the Hunters do is the right thing, but lately has been finding the line a little blurred. He would never do anything to put a fellow Hunter at risk however, or go against the ideals of the Hunters.

Talents & Weaknesses

Ranik’s main skill is in combat, being fairly good at mixed martial arts. He is highly skilled in the use a variety of firearms and other weapons, his personal favourite being a broadsword given to him by Conrad. He is just as comfortable and good with using weapons as he is his own hands and constantly studies new uses and equipment. He is proud that the other Hunters know they can rely on him for these skills and he never fails. He has decent tracking skills, can treat minor wounds and can sometimes charm himself into and out of situations. He is constantly trying to better himself with the help of other Hunters and is more than willing to rely on them when needed, as he knows he is far from expert in many things. Due to his constant training, he is quite athletic, strong and fast.

He has a talent for making quick decisions and following them though. He can become cold heartened when it comes to his enemies and will use anything at his disposal to achieve the goal, with no guilt.

He is fairly intelligent and quick-witted, but academically struggles from time to time, with studying not being his strong suit. He is a good guitar player and has a love of music, so those components of his studies come easy to him, but he tends to have difficulty with the multimedia and electronics side, scrapping by with slightly above average marks. He welcomes the challenges however.
