Background
Randall's mother and father are both employees of the University of Reading, though neither teach. Both are shapeshifters, members of the local wolf clan, though Tallulah hails from the Iberian peninsula – Spain. Tallulah is a secretary for the art department, and Randall is the head of financial services. They first met over a budget proposal, and from there the relationship progressed into love – enough for five children. Randall is the middle child. The Connors are a well-established family in Reading – Connor's paternal grandfather was a clan leader – though with so many submissive members and weak dominants, they have fallen from grace (and power).
With so many other children in the family, Randall was hardly spoilt, and he spent a fair amount of time out from under his parents' eye. Though a weak shapeshifter, he was always athletic, and excelled in schoolyard sports. He was closest to his younger sister, as his older brother was, even then, socially conscious enough to understand that a submissive had little place in the hierarchy. His other siblings were too far from him in age to serve as good playmates. Randall did well in school, but not outstandingly. He made it into college in the middle of the pack and kept his nose down in classes, doing the work and learning what he was supposed to. He plays rugby in the fall semester and sails in the spring semester, and has a job as a cook.
On the clan front, there have been a few troubles. His younger sister hit adulthood in a big way, and she's uninterested in the males of the clan – always a problem given the traditional desire for clan women to marry fellow shapeshifters. He himself does not fit in particularly well with the medieval-style orientation of a wolf clan – a submissive, he has little power, but he's a liberal at heart and is uninterested in rolling his belly to whichever strong man who comes along. Randall has turned to his younger sister, not trusting his dominant brother to be much better than the rest of them. They moved in together when she came to Reading Unversity, Randall protecting her from unwanted male attention, she shielding him from unwanted dominants – it's not a perfect arrangement, for neither is strong enough to ward off a determined assault, but it has worked well enough thus far.
Physical Appearance
Randall has strawberry blonde hair that often appears shaggy and unkempt. He tends to shave only occasionally, and maintains a very short goatee when he does. He has brown eyes that are light enough to be called amber and short, but dark, eyelashes. He has an athletic build, as is befitting in a star rugby player, but he is not overburdened with muscles or height. He has the kind of skin that tans only with difficulty and even then has a reddish undertone.
Randall prefers cargo pants to jeans or slacks, and usually can occasionally be seen wearing khakis. He likes button-down oxford shirts and tends to wear them most of the time that he isn't working out or just plain working. He prefers white or other pastel colors. Randall hates ties. He has his ear pierced and usually wears a diamond stud in it. He also has a tattoo of a bull's horns on his right shoulder blade, and a multitude of thin scars covering his body.
His wolf is a large one compared to the wild Eurasian wolf, but on the smaller side in comparison with other shapeshifters'. His mother's wolf is an Iberian wolf, and that bloodline shows in his form and coloration. He has a tan underside, but his back is mostly gray. The bottom portion of his muzzle is creamy white, as are his chest and paws. The underside of his tail is tan, while its top is as black as his nose. He has black marks on his legs and a black stripe on the bottom of his tail.
Personality
Randall is the kind of man who eats spaghetti from a jar and makes his own garlic bread. He is easily distracted but he enjoys physical efforts; where possible, he's a do-it-yourselfer – a fact made obvious by his eclectically painted shelves and tables, garnished from garage sales and flea markets. Though not powerful enough to be considered dominant, Randall is neither masochistic nor repressed. He walks under the protection of his sister, who is living with him to avoid the unwanted attentions of the male members of the clan. He has a core of hidden defiance within him, even when he is at his most vulnerable, and he can be considered an idealist, though hardly an optimist. As a general rule, he hides his feelings well, though he does poorly at faking them; the best he can do is blank neutrality. He enjoys the clean rules of sports and loves the outdoors.
Talents & Weaknesses
Randall is a fair cook, though he prefers to work with existent items and manipulate them to fit his own style to starting from scratch. He's the kind of guy who'll buy boxed stuffing and chop his own vegetables for it, or add hot sauce to a perfectly good beef patty. He doesn't like to spend a lot of time on any one thing, but as a general rule he enjoys making his own creations and adding his own touches, and he takes pride in his food.
Randall's position as a submissive sometimes causes problems for him, especially because he considers himself an intelligent individual and has been known to suggest that he doesn't intend to permit aggression and metaphysical power to serve as a substitute for intelligence in a leader. He loves his family to a degree that could be considered debilitating; he dislikes the leader of Reading's wolf clan, but the needs of his relatives keeps him in town.
Studying history as he has been for so long, Randall has a good grasp on historical truths and political implications. He is a good speaker and knows how to read a room well. He's good with people and can often tell the mood of a crowd. He is often busy, however, working on the papers and dissertations that he feels like he's drowning in. His specialties are naval warfare and the French Revolution. Unfortunately, theory is not sufficient replacement for experience, and Randall doesn't have an overabundance of experience, which occasionally gets him into trouble when he has his infrequent debates with his elders, who have sneered at his idealism more than once.
Randall plays the loose forward position in rugby, and as such is very flexible mentally and fast on his feet. He has a lot of responsibilities that he has to balance in the game, and he's talented at doing so. As such, he's received a bit of notoriety among the sport's local fans, and is popular in local bars. Randall can switch swiftly between defensive and offensive play, and his talents in rugby carry over to real life. Unfortunately, the confidence that he's established in himself as a good rugby player can backfire in his face; among the shapeshifters, he's only a submissive, without the rank to back up his confidence. For this reason, he tends to avoid others of his kind, other than his family. He doesn't feel that the modern world that he lives in and the medieval one that the clan structure reflects mesh well.
