Background

Miles was born on February 14th 1973 to parents Bledri and Isabella Gwilt. His parents were both Dominant members of the large Wolf Clan in Newcastle, Tyne and Wear. Bledri had risen to become the clan leader following his forced exile from his home of Cardiff, Wales in 1970. Bledri had been appalled to see what passed for a leader among wolves in this bleak Northern industrial town, and struck down the weak willed and ineffectual dominant male, assuming the position himself.

In 1972 Bledri and Isabella McQueen; a prominent member of the clan in her own right, married, and a year later Maelgwn was born. Two years later the couple produced a second child, a girl; Aerfen.

Miles’ early years were fairly uneventful, but it was clear to all he would someday be the clan leader. He had inherited both his father’s natural strength and size and his mother’s intelligence. Aerfen was developing in the same way, though she was smaller in stature, and for a while all was well as the Gwilt’s ruled as the clan’s golden family.

Miles entered puberty at 12, and took it all in his stride as befitted a boy of his bloodline. He grew at an astonishing rate, and by 14 he stood just shy of six feet tall. It was no surprise to all when the change took him and he asserted himself as a dominant, by seventeen he was able to shift three body parts seamlessly – his mouth to snout, hands to claws and his ears to those of a wolf. As a wolf he was almost as big as his father, who was a formidable bear-like size in animal form.

It was a happy, but instructive childhood for the Gwilt offspring – while their father worked they were home-schooled by their educated mother. When Bledri returned from the docks on an evening he would tell the children stories of the ancient days when their kind had been young, and lecture them on their bloodline and responsibilities to the clan. They had little contact with other children, except those of the clan; and in those dark days children were few and far between among the wolves of the north.

When Miles was eighteen a great schism broke the clan in two, and Miles’ mother and father were killed. In the following carnage most of the clan was murdered; Aerfen was forced to flee south and Miles captured and tortured for sport. Little is ever spoken of this period, but what is known is that six months later Miles managed to escape and ventured south after his sister. When Miles turned South, few Wolves remained in the North.

Aerfen had settled in London, among a wolf pack who had excepted her new blood willingly, but Miles had no desire to settle as yet. He roamed for a while, doing various odd jobs to finance his travelling. Docker, Miner, Bouncer or labourer – it mattered not. He developed a love of fitness and weight training along the way, supplementing his earnings with boxing prize-fights. He sculpted his body mercilessly, lest he be bested again, and became an avid scholar of the martial arts.

Almost seven years of travelling, including time in the US, Europe and China, eventually brought him to Reading (it seemed as good a place as any), where he has now lived for eight years. After completing his Degree in History, and subsequently his Masters, he is now studying for his Doctorate in Ancient History. He likes the City, and has come to think of it as home; when his Doctorate is complete he is looking towards the possibility of teaching within the city.

Miles has been Clan Leader of the Reading Wolves for four years now, after defeating and killing the previous occupier of the position. He is a firm, but fair leader, showing absolute devotion to the clan, he always has time for those who look to him for support. However, he suffers no disobedience or betrayal, and has already killed two would-be usurpers during his tenure as leader. Presently Miles can be found residing in a small apartment in Lawrence Housing, though he has been saving his money in order to buy a place of his own. It irks him to be beholding to anyone, even one of his clan, and has only stayed there so long in order to provide stability and honour tradition.

Miles has had little to say about the deaths of those at the campus, though he is currently investigating the fatalities with characteristic subterfuge.

Physical Appearance

Miles is a little over Six-Feet two-inches tall and 246 Lbs (17.5 stone) of pure muscle – he has the look of a professional bodybuilder or heavyweight boxer. He has dark brown hair with speckles of grey, usually kept short and ruffled. He is handsome in a rough and rugged way, and appears to be in his late twenties, rather than 34 as is his actual age.

Mile’s body, though tanned, is covered in a roadmap of pale-white scars. These strange marks are a subject Miles rarely, if ever, discusses. His eyes are blue-grey, and he is usually seen sporting a short tousled beard, or designer-stubble (on occasion). Miles feels most at home in denim and T-Shirts, but is not averse to wearing a suit and tie when the situation arises. He is stylish in an understated way, he rarely wears expensive clothes but realises the value of people’s perceptions, as a result he is never untidy, dirty or unkempt. Everything about Miles is measured.

Miles cannot help but strike an imposing figure, but moves with a grace unusual of a man his size. He is in every respect an alpha-male, and no-one has ever been guilty of mistaking him for a Submissive. He uses his size to his advantage in a number of ways and is immensely strong and powerful, even by Shape-shifter standards. However, many adversaries have equated his physical strength with mental weakness, and Miles plays on misconception regularly.

In Wolf-Form Miles is a giant ghost-gray Timber wolf, as muscular when Canis Lupis as when human, with a shock of black arching down his spine and up his tail. Miles often assumes his wolf form in private, and feels more at home under his bed than on top of it.

Personality

Miles appears to be a brooding figure, and tends to stick to his own company wherever he can. This is often taken as arrogance, but in fact Miles is just very careful about whom he chooses as friends. To his friends, and his pack however, Miles is fiercely loyal and protective. Once Miles is a friend, he is a friend for life, but he cannot suffer a betrayal. Forgiveness is not a virtue he possesses, and as pack leader he knows it is not something he could afford – ‘Tragedy follows folly’ has been a life lesson for Miles. Long ago he was betrayed and everything he held dear taken from him, this is a lesson Miles has never forgotten.

Miles is aware of the importance and responsibilities of his position, and is therefore careful to always guard himself. Few get to know him well enough to call him a true friend, but those who do know him as a jovial, sensitive and intelligent man. He has dry sense of humour, and an excellent sense of wit. In private he is full of fun, and loves to enjoy himself with his friends, but this is a side few see.

He loves working out in the gym (where he works part-time), and when he was a little younger he was a successful amateur boxer. He now practices Mixed-Martial-Arts, his size and strength making him a natural striker and grappler.

When not working out Miles is a keen academic, with a particular passion for military history. This is something he has loved since he played war games as a child with his father. He hopes to turn this into a career in teaching once he has his PhD.

He very rarely drinks; few have seen him indulge in more than a couple of beers at any one time. He fears losing control, and has a practiced iron core of self-discipline. Miles is often admired by those of the opposite sex, but he has had few serious relationships – most women have found him too closed and distanced to ever really engage with. Miles himself is indifferent to this, when he needs female company he goes out and seeks it for an evening, but he is yet to meet a woman who could persuade him to commit to anything more. There is always the underlying sense that though now at home in Reading, Miles is at heart a wanderer.

Talents & Weaknesses

Miles is a powerful Dominant Shape shifter, and is capable of shifting three body parts; hands, mouth and ears. He is very large and powerful, with excellent speed. Good genetics and years of training have turned him into a ferocious fighter.

He is also exceptionally intelligent and cunning, there is little that escapes his attention or that he does not understand. He is also fairly solvent; he has always worked steadily and is frugal in his quality of living. Miles is, however, completely unforgiving and without mercy. As a clan leader, this is a strength, as an individual this is a weakness. He finds it incredibly difficult to forge meaningful relationships with anyone, and his loyalty to his clan is bound through duty and kinship, not love. He has made many enemies in the last twenty years, and his past has been known to come back with vengeance. Though he is respected and trusted as a leader, by those who do not know him well he is generally feared. As a result, he has few true friends, and almost as few allies.

He is incredibly single minded when set on a course, and once a decision is made he stands by it without wavering. As a result, men and women have went to their deaths where others may have shown leniency.

Miles also has a distrust of cars, buses or any other form of transport. Though he accepts them as necessity, he walks wherever he can.
