Background
Luke is the second-born child of Sara and James Adams. Family is very important amongst witches and being what he is, it was inevitable that the three siblings grew close. However, Luke was always closer to Leanne than he was to Simon. Simon had always been the protective eldest sibling to them both. In Luke’s eyes, Simon served more as a guide and role model than a friend. His little jokes and shared secrets were for Leanne alone. An event in their adult years would later turn the gap into a rift. He played the role of protective older brother, but in his younger years he was also quite the prankster. Thus he was ever the nuisance to his younger sister, Leanne, both through his jokes and what she referred to as his excessive protectiveness. Of course, he considered it a brother’s duty to watch out for his little sister. She needed protecting, after all. There was such a thing as being too friendly for your own good. Luke’s resolve in that matter only hardened after she developed her Primary Power. He was as surprised as the rest of his family when she showed signs of being a Clairvoyant. He felt proud of her development though. A witch reached maturity when their Primary Power manifested itself. His little sister had grown up, although in an unexpected way.
Both he and Simon had turned out to be Weather Witches, which is why Leanne’s Clairvoyancy was such a shock. Luke was delighted with his Power, as he had always had an appreciation of his mother’s ability. He remembered the day his Power had manifested clearly, though a few of the finer details escape his memory. It had been a humid overcast day, hot despite the sun’s concealment. Luke had been fourteen and had gotten into an argument at school. He doesn’t recall what the disagreement was about or even who he had been arguing with. All he remembers is getting frustrated and then…something clicked. That’s the only way, to this day, he can describe the feeling. It was as if something long out of place had suddenly settled into its intended position. The next thing Luke knew, the overcast day turned dark, the clouds dropping their burden of moisture. He had seen enough of his mother’s magic to know the sudden weather shift wasn’t natural. A few moments later and he realized he had been the cause. Luke remembers standing out alone in the torrent, feeling a mixture of elation and fear in discovering his Primary Power. Unfortunately for those around him, Luke didn’t master his Power for roughly a year. In other words, if the conditions were right, it would spontaneously start raining, snowing, and sometimes even a thick fog would crop up. After that year, with his mother’s patient tutelage, Luke managed to not cause sudden weather changes.
Luke was always something of an erratic student, all the more so after his Primary Power developed. He had never been a top student, but not for lack of brains. What he had lacked was the motivation to actually do the work assigned to him. His academic performance was much better when he was a Junior, but once he hit Secondary School, his grades plummeted. Of course, that can be attributed to his spending far too much time on the weather. He barely passed through that level, but he became more serious when he entered his 10th Year. No one in his family is completely sure why he suddenly took an avid interest in his education, but his parents didn’t mind not knowing the reason as long as he continued to excel in his classes. He scored relatively high in his GCSEs and did as well on his AS and A2 exams. His University of choice was Reading, his test scores qualifying him for admission. There were a few questions concerning his academic record in his younger years, which delayed his acceptance to the University. Eventually, however, he was granted admission. A week after his 18th birthday, Luke wasted no time. He found and applied for a variety of Covens in the Reading area. He settled on the Hawthorn Coven, as many of its members were also studying at Reading University. Six months passed when Luke found his second calling (his first being, of course, his Primary Power). Upon first attending the University, he had yet to select a major. His studies were general, taking several courses that he thought would be interesting. He knew he did want to and planned on advancing his education to Meteorology, in order to improve his understanding of the weather. But he’d have to earn his undergraduate degree before he had the credentials to take the course. When he discovered Photography, he knew he’d found his major after the first class. When his parents learned of this, they sent him an early birthday present: a professional photographer’s camara, one of the latest models.
After his first year at Reading, Luke had settled into his new life. The Coven he had joined a bare year ago was like family, an expected outcome. He was doing well in his major and had even applied for a part-time photography job at a local magazine. Impressed with his portfolio, which consisted of numerous photos of the weather, which the magazine editor had declared impressive, he easily got the job. Luke received quite a bit of praise from his employers, none of the other photographers, even the full-time ones, could match his weather shots. The next year, Leanne arrived at Reading. He knew she’d been looking at the University, which had been fine with him. He honestly would have enjoyed having her around some more. He had been so absorbed with his studies, he’d only made it back home for a couple of visits. Now she arrived for good. And not only was she attending the same University as her older brother, but she also joined the same Coven. That was perfectly fine with Luke as well…at least for a few months.
It was Luke’s third year at Reading when Simon announced some startling news: his older brother was going to be marrying a vampire. Luke didn’t know what to make of it, only that he possessed a deep sense of betrayal. But his confusion didn’t last long. It was quickly replaced by anger. He hadn’t even known Simon was courting a vampire, much less considering to marry outside of his species. Wanting answers, Luke had confronted his older brother. Needless to say, the encounter didn’t end well. Perhaps the reason he was furious with Simon’s decision was because he had always looked up to his brother, respected him. Luke didn’t even know why he felt so angry with Simon; he couldn’t seem to help it. Whenever he even thought of his brother, he was filled with anger. Over time, that hatred spread to include vampires as well. Things only became worse. Leanne actually accepted Simon’s decision. That cut even deeper than Simon’s betrayal. While Luke had always viewed Simon as a role model, he had seen Leanne as a friend. The whole sequence of events left Luke very confused and upset. He threw himself into his studies, just for something to distract himself with. He pushed himself hard, finding that when he worked himself to exhaustion doing one thing or another, he was too tired to dwell on recent events. Aside from his suddenly working himself half to death, Luke’s behavior hasn’t changed at all. The Coven suspects nothing, but he knows that Leanne understands perfectly. The sudden distance, though not nearly as great as the one between the two brothers, pains him. Luke wants to make things right between him and Leanne again, but can never find the words to do so.
Physical Appearance
As a child, Luke was never much of a looker. The best way to describe him would be as a gangly youth. It wasn’t until he hit his late teen years that he started to grow into his limbs, becoming the type of guy who could appeal to the ladies. His hair had never been the blonde of his sister, though they did share the curls. Luke’s locks had always been the medium brown they are today, but they did, and still do, possess a reddish tint. He will periodically run his hands through his hair throughout the day, so it never remains neat. His gray-blue eyes were also unremarkable, at least in Luke’s eyes, but he does admit the color seems to match up with his Primary Power. He was never one to care for his appearance, even now when he is actually capable of attracting the attention of the opposite sex. He disregards any advances made by the bolder human girls; unlike Simon, he has no intentions of marrying, or even courting, outside of his own species.
In his style of dress, Luke is very nearly the polar opposite of his sister. He rarely, if at all, wears bright colors, preferring the darker end of the spectrum. Of course, that doesn’t mean he dresses entirely in black. He will wear lighter colors, just nothing vivid. But it is odd to see him wearing only light colors. Regardless of the color, his clothing is never anything elaborate. As for his physical build, it reflects his athleticism. While Luke would never be called an exercise nut, he does work out to keep fit. Track and kickboxing are also excellent methods of stress relief, which is something he is currently in need of. His muscle would be classified more as lean and wiry, as opposed to bulk. He’s more of a runner than a fighter and honestly prefers track to trained combat. He tops Leanne by a couple of inches, but would be considered to have average height for a male.
Personality
As odd as it may seem to other people (the majority being human), what Luke loves doing the most is standing out in the rain. The appeal doesn’t come from his getting drenched. In fact, it doesn’t even come from a physical level. Thunderstorms are by far Luke’s most favorite type of weather. When he’s out in the middle of a storm, in the midst of the beauty of it all, he can feel the storm, as if it were some living thing. And to Luke, weather does seem truly alive. He always has a sense of peace when out in his element and will often stay outdoors for hours at a time. On other points, Luke is a hard person to read. He seldom gives any indication as to his emotions. Most people see him as the sort of person who doesn’t anger easily (i.e. has a long fuse). But they’ve never seen him around vampires. Of course, “most people” tend to be humans, and the majority of humans don’t even know vampires actually exist.
That is, perhaps, his most dangerous characteristic though. For even when he’s at his angriest, Luke still doesn’t show a thing. There are only subtle hints, the most prominent usually being the threatening edge to his voice, that only those close to him can see (namely his blood relations and the Coven). On the other hand, Luke is hard not to like. Only when he is completely past his breaking point does he become truly dangerous (and at the moment, only vampires and Simon can trigger that much anger). He’s outgrown the pranks he used to pull on Leanne during their childhood, but that doesn’t mean his humorous personality has disappeared altogether. His compassionate side is more noticeable now than it was in his early years, along with patience. Any natural photographer must have patience. Seeing how Luke is willing to remain in the same position for hours until he captures his shot, he definitely had that trait. His protective nature, however unfortunate for his younger sister, remains the same. Luke was always protective of Leanne and he always will be. He’s convinced she needs protecting more than ever now, taking her Primary Power into consideration. He does admit that he’s overdone it one or two times…or three…or four…okay, so he’s overdone it more than a few times. But he’s never caused any lasting harm and at least he had good intentions. That’s got to count for something, right?
Talents & Weaknesses
Obviously, the first talent that comes to mind is his Primary Power. As a Weather Witch, he is able to change the weather, as the name suggests. He sees the weather as patterns in his mind’s eye, each type having a unique layout. In other words, he wouldn’t do the same thing to create a snowstorm as he would to produce fog. The patterns Luke sees could best be related to jigsaw puzzles. Each piece of a puzzle is equivalent to an element of the weather; you can’t complete the puzzle unless you have all the pieces. After that, it’s only a matter of fitting the pieces in the correct pattern. But of course, just like a puzzle, there are only certain pieces he can use. He can’t make a blizzard appear in the fall, because the right pieces wouldn’t be present. It’s just like how a puzzle piece from one set won’t fit into another puzzle. Luke is quite adept at solving such puzzles, both magical and mundane ones alike.
Luke hasn’t fully mastered his Power, which is understandable. Since learning to control his Power, the weather doesn’t change spontaneously, with one exception. Any intensely strong emotion is enough to wrest his control away and the weather change that occurs always responds to his mood. If the emotion was anger, the most likely weather occurrences would be the most destructive available. For example, if he were to lose control to his anger on a rainy day, chances are a thunderstorm would break out. Fortunately for those in the vicinity, this doesn’t happen often. It isn’t any fun to others when a thunderstorm suddenly appears above you, especially when you’re outdoors.
Photography is another given when it comes to Luke’s talents. He has the patience and skill required for that field and he’s proven it in his part-time job as well as in his class. For him, the perfect shot isn’t something he takes at random and never an image he prepares. The best way for him to describe it is as instinctive. Luke somehow knows, as soon as he lays eyes on it, that he has his shot. And he never hesitates to take it. Whether or not he gets the shot varies each time, but he’ll often be out for the entire day on a photography assignment or even just for kicks, to see what he can capture.
Luke’s greatest weakness has to be his detachment. He is the most relaxed when he’s with his family and the Coven, he rarely allows himself to fully unwind. He always remains politely interested in the surrounding conversation, but he isn’t the most talkative person. Words don’t come to him easily, even amongst friends and family. Once he starts talking, he becomes self-conscious, feeling that all he is accomplishing is making himself look like a fool. On the other hand, Luke is an excellent person to rely on. Once he’s committed to something, he follows through with it and always does his best. However, he’ll get uncomfortable when praised, preferring to remain in the background.
Physically, Luke is an athletic person. He loves track and can run a mile in just under a minute. He knows he isn’t the fastest person around, but frankly, he couldn’t care less about his speed. All he loves is the performance. Kickboxing is much the same. His attraction to the sport is from the pure effort he has to put into it. He chooses not to compete in both track and kickboxing, enjoying the sports alone. He doesn’t get any satisfaction in defeating another person and is content with simply improving his own skills.
Unlike his sister, Luke has never had a gift with animals. It isn’t that he doesn’t like them, but rather that the feeling isn’t often mutual. Not every animal dislikes him, but he’s been bitten, clawed, thrown and burnt far too often for him to just casually walk right up to one. Every once in a while he’ll come across an animal that doesn’t want to use him as a chew toy, but that is those occurrences number in the minority. Taking all of that into account, it isn’t surprising that Luke prefers to let someone else directly handle any animals.
Other than his Primary Power, Luke possesses only the basic magical knowledge. His parents had tried to teach him, but that was when he hadn’t had much interest in education of any kind, even magical. Now he regrets that choice and is trying to make up for it. In his free time, when he isn’t honing his Primary Power or catching up on sleep, he studies up on magical items. He isn’t nearly as adept as Leanne, but she does have the advantage of having paid attention to their parents, if you can even call that an advantage. It is more along the lines of a lapse on Luke’s part. So far he’s gotten down of the attributes of most crystals, but not much past that. His free time isn’t as plentiful as it was when he was younger, another reason why he regrets not paying attention to his parents’ lessons. In regard to his sister, there lies a weakness. Luke will do anything to protect her. His first thought is always for his sister and he will easily disregard his own safety to maintain hers. He understands how infuriating this can be to Leanne; she didn’t lose all of her potential friends because of her Primary Power. His being against intimate interspecies relationships and not being afraid of showing his disapproval can account for several of Leanne’s suitors never approaching her again, even if they were only offering friendship.
