Background
Kaie was the firstborn of the Thurston household. A curious and imaginative child, she spent most of her time alone in a world of her own. When her younger brother Shaun was born, her parents turned their attentions to him, which didn’t bother her at all, being an independent child. The world was something to be discovered, and freedom was the road she travelled. She loved nothing more than being outdoors alone, with the elements, where she could feel the same wildness in the earth pulse within her blood. But for all her solitariness and feral like nature, she had a good relationship with her family. Her parents brought her up well, and instilled strong morals and compassion for all beings in her. As for her brother, she loved him dearly, and although she never seemed to be around much, she always kept an eye on him. In fact, it was through defending her brother that she discovered her primary power.
She was thirteen when she went to the local playground to pick her brother up, who was then only eight years old. As she turned the corner in to the park, she saw Shaun walking up the path only to be knocked down by an older kid on his bicycle. She shouted at the boy, and he laughed as he cycled off. Seeing her poor brother stifling tears, something within her snapped, and as she stared after the older kid, the cuffs of his trouser leg burst into flame. He leapt off his bicycle screaming, dropping to the floor and rolling until the fire went out. Before he had even finished Kaie had tenderly taken Shaun’s hand and began to walk him home. She was trembling, inherently knowing that it was her that caused the fire. Her father was a Fire Witch, and she had come into her power. It was a moment filled with revelation, excitement and apprehension.
The following years of her life were filled with time dedicated to developing and controlling her new power. Her father knew only too well that this power needed to be disciplined as soon as possible, or suffer the consequences. All too often during her school years there were small fires breaking out, or classmates getting mysteriously burnt. Despite this, she was quick to develop her powers, finding the manipulation of fire to be almost as easy as breathing. It was not the fire that Kaie really needed to discipline, it was herself. Although never a mean child, she was often tempted to use her power to take small revenges upon other children who were mean to her or others. She was quick-tempered and self-willed, thinking that she could right the wrongs that she could see around her. Also, her passionate nature affected her ability to control her power. The more emotionally unstable she was, the more likely it was that a fire would spontaneously arise uncontrollably, causing much stress to Kaie and those around her.
Kaie passed her GCSE’s with good grades, and was doing well in her first year of AS levels. She was still wild and idealistic, an independent young woman who was a loner by choice. One dark winter night, whilst walking back home late from class, she heard noises coming from a shadowy alleyway. She could see the silhouettes of a gang kicking and beating a lone person. She instantly walked towards them, being rash, her actions fuelled by a genuine need to help the unknown person, an unbridled anger towards the cruel thugs, and her own ego willing her to be the hero, the protector. She yelled at the gang to stop, and all three of them turned, two men and a woman. They instantly turned their attention on her, and she revelled in the fear that shone in their eyes as she cupped a ball of intense flame in her palm, and launched it at the floor before where they stood. One of the men turned and ran, whilst the other two stayed to fight. She dealt with them easily, sending the woman running away with a few fireballs to the body, and burning the mans skin by grabbing hold of him until he pleaded to be released.
With the gang disposed of, she turned her attention to the victim. It was a young man, about her age, bleeding from his nose and with the makings of a black eye colouring his face. She didn’t know what to say, as he stared at her in utter terror, huddled against the wall in fright. She reached her hand out to him, gently saying she came to help him. He rose to his feet, backing away from her, and before he turned and ran he shot her a glare that was filled with horror and hatred. She stood there for a long time after that, in the darkness of the alleyway, and that night she realised the full responsibility that came with her power. The very person she had saved hated her, and for all she knew would turn Hunter. She only meant well, yet that was not enough. It was foolish to reveal her power in such a brazen way, and to let her emotions get the better of her yet again. She told nobody what happened that evening, and vowed to use her power for the good of all, and to also control herself.
Kaie is now attending Reading University, having only just moved into Hawthorn House. A new phase in her life, she is determined to be an effective member of the coven, although she is already missing Shaun dearly. The news of the recent killings has rattled Kaie, and she is eager to find the murderers before they hurt anyone else. This time, she will stop the killers, and harm no other in doing so.
Physical Appearance
Kaie’s movements are fluid and expressive, although at times quite deliberate from her efforts to maintain a sense of self-control. A rich, coppery russet red mane of long hair frames a creamy face which seems carved and somewhat aloof and mean, until she smiles, and warmth spreads throughout her features. Her eyes reveal the depth of her passionate nature. Pools of emerald green, they sometimes give away too much about how she feels. Kaie is a ‘rough and tumble’ kind of girl, who would rather be prepared for anything than dressed to impress. She is quite active and athletic from her time spent outdoors, which has resulted in a toned figure. Tall and lithe, she is stronger than she first appears. Her usual outfit consists of dark jeans and a top, but she is never without her treasured necklace. On a silver chain hangs a fire agate pendant, warm and golden. She has worn it since about the time she attacked the thugs, and it represents her desire to overcome her destructive element and transmute it into healing and protective power.
Personality
She has matured much since that night in the alleyway, and has come to learn that just because her power gives her strength and might, she needs to have strength of will and discipline too in order to use it for it’s highest good. Those who do not know Kaie very well perceive her as somewhat restrained and secretive. This is only because she struggles hard to keep her emotions in check, and still has that solitary streak in her. Those who know her understand that sometimes her feelings can overwhelm her, especially her anger. She never means to be distant, because really she is a warm and compassionate person at heart, yet the nature of her power and her relationship with it means she has to be extra careful, because any mistakes could cost her dearly. Kaie sees herself as a protector of sorts, so will always be the first to spring into action when somebody needs help. Although she is now much more tame in her ways, it doesn’t take much to bring the forcefulness of her emotions to the forefront, and she will willingly use aggressive force if anybody threatens those who she cares about. People are often surprised at the force of her emotions when they first see them arise. Kaie still likes to spend most of her time alone, but now recognises that she has to trust and work other people, having learnt that she alone cannot right all the wrongs in the world, try as she might, especially with the threat of the Hunters that have cast a shadow over the campus.
Talents & Weaknesses
Kaie’s primary power is that of working with the element of fire. She can manifest flames from nothing, fuelling it with her will alone. She has learnt to use her power for offensive purposes, and knows how to form and launch fire balls, can burn things by touching them, and create small balls of combustible flame that use up the surrounding oxygen.
The power of fire manipulation is one of the more destructive powers bestowed to the witches, and this is something Kaie feels she has to come to terms with. Not long ago she exulted in the feeling of strength that fighting and her primary power gave her. Now she struggles with herself to find more peaceful and diplomatic ways of using her gift, refusing to believe that all there is to her are unruly forces that destroy regardless of intent. This has brought her to try to develop subtler ways of using her power.
Since her AS Levels, she has been learning to do fire divination, although she is by no means proficient. This is a new aspect of her power that she is developing, and all too often she divines too little to enhance her knowledge of certain situations, which frustrates her immensely. This is something she usually keeps to herself, knowing that there are others with greater power in the ways of far vision and insight. But she is also now learning to do candle magic, in which she has made much more progress. She often likes to perform these spells outdoors in solitude, where she can feel the pulse of the earth lend strength to the magic she performs.
In her heart, she has always been an adventurer, filled with dreams of great discovery and exploration, ever since childhood. That, teamed with her curiosity concerning people and cultures has led her to doing an Archaeology degree. For her, life is just filled with wondrous things, and people are no exception. Kaie is an observer of people, and often picks up on things not said through peoples actions and body language. In turn, she can adapt to different circumstances and people quickly, responding to the situation at hand.
Kaie’s weakness is most certainly her self-doubt. She simply finds it hard to trust herself and her feelings. She feels as if she is forever on the brink of some unthinkable emotion, and always fights within herself to repress these feelings in order to not do something she might later regret. She suffers from an inner conflict to reach out and express herself to people, yet at the same time wanting to be alone, holding back, afraid of losing control of herself. Another of Kaie’s weaknesses, yet also one of her strengths, is her protective nature. She often acts without thinking when it comes to helping those she cares for. Having an inherent need to help others, she sees her role as a guardian, and blames herself if anything bad happens to anyone.
