Background
Charlie's life was rocky from the moment he was conceived. His mother had gotten pregnant from a one night stand, and of course, the father wanted nothing to do with his child. The only thing that stopped Charlie's mother from aborting the baby was that a friend had mentioned just how much she could get for child support, not to mention a council flat. Despite his mother's original disinterest in him, Eliza Macintosh was not a terrible mother. She didn't hate her son, and did her best for him. When Charlie was two his mother found a decent guy and settled down with him, eventually becoming pregnant with Charlie's sister, Mary-Ann.
As he grew older he didn't particularly see eye to eye with his step-father, but one thing they did have in common was their love for Mary-Ann. Charlie absolutely doted on his little sister, and while Julian wasn't always happy with his step-son, he did know he could always trust him to look after Mary-Ann. By the time Charlie hit his teenager years things in their household were becoming strained. He was always involved with the wrong crowd, mucking around at school and getting in trouble for not doing his homework. It was a rebellion phase, a chance to irritate his perfect step-father even more.
It was a pregnancy scare when he was 17 that got Charlie sorted out. He had always had a way with the girls, and one of the girls he had slept with said she had missed her period. It turned out to be a false alarm, but the worry of history repeating itself (and some pleading from his little sister) got him to wake up a bit. His attitude at school began to change and he began to put the work in with his studies.
It was theatre that was Charlie's passion and he was accepted into a good performing arts school in London. His sister often visited him, and one of Charlie's friends, Robert, began to take a shine to the bright and bubbly 17 year old. If that wasn't appalling enough for Charlie, it turned out that his 'friend' was in fact a vampire. He had left his little sister in the safe care of Robert one night and returned home early to find the vampire feeding on his sister. Robert explained that he wasn't hurting Mary-Ann, he was making her like him because she was so special to him. Charlie went nuts, tried to fight Robert and was knocked out in the process.
Charlie awoke to find himself in the care of a group of strangers who were intent on badgering him with questions about what happened. Stubbornly he refused to answer anything until he was told what was going on. Realising how much he had already seen and heard, the group begrudgingly explained everything to him. They were a group of hunters and had been tracking the vampire Robert Lawley for the last year. If he hadn't witnessed what had had, Charlie would have laughed at the tale they spun him about vampires, witches and shapeshifters existing, but he had seen it with his own eyes.
When they realised that Robert and Mary-Ann had left London, the hunters began to pack up their things and prepare to follow the trail else where. Once again Charlie was stubborn and wanted to go with them, to become one of them. Recognising his thirst for vengeance that would most likely get him killed, Reg, the leader of the hunters refused. It was only one of the other hunters, Rosalie, that managed to get Reg to change his mind about Charlie. Rosalie had lost a son to Robert Lawley during their hunt and Charlie reminded her a lot of him. She had grown attached to the kid, and could see that he would be an asset to their group. Reg had noticed that Charlie seemed to be helping Rosalie work through the grief of losing her son, and so he agreed, although he had two conditions. The first was that Charlie needed to go home and continue life as normal while he was trained, and the second was that he didn't go running off on some crazed vengeance attack.
Charlie agreed with the conditions and the group settled in London for a year, working there as they trained Charlie. At first he was resistant to some of their procedures and regulations, but over time he began to realise why each one existed. Rosalie had been correct; Charlie was a good addition to their group and ended up aiding their cause. It all changed when information came through from another group to say that Robert Lawley had been spotted in London again. As the group planned their move to the location, arguments between Charlie and Reg began to take place. In the end Charlie stormed off, leaving the group and heading off to find Robert himself.
Meeting up with some other hunters, Charlie slid easily into the role of leadership and lead them to Robert. Reg had told Charlie that he was a fool to consider taking on the vampire himself, and that it took time and planning to take down a vampire as old as Robert. Reg had underestimated Charlie, and in the end it was Charlie and his hunters that were triumphant. Before killing the vampire, Charlie tried to find out information from him about his sister. Anger and pain got the better of him though and instead of torturing the vampire he ended up killing him.
Robert's death taught Charlie several things; one was that Reg and his team had been old fashioned, and the other was that he still had things to learnt. He spent the next few years building up his team and learning to control his temper. Members of his group were accepted based on what skills they could provide, not in the heat of the moment. His group built up a reputation for their thorough research and kills, and for targeting college and university areas. Occasionally they accepted paid jobs from people, and one of these took them to Manchester. While targeting a group of tiger shapeshifters there one of his team was killed, leaving an open space in his group.
After completing the job in Manchester, Charlie headed to Reading after hearing from an old contact that two hunters he knew of had gone missing six months before. No one had seen or heard of them, and as a favour to his old friend Charlie agreed to look into it. While his team didn't initially find out anything about the missing hunters, they did come across two vampires and a wolf shapeshifter. Charlie chose to keep his team there and with the help of contacts they got themselves enrolled for the new University year.
Physical Appearance
Charlie is one of those men that is handsome and is very aware of the affect he has one women. In public he is always wearing a cheeky smile that melts some hearts and makes others wary of him. The smile is just for show though, and he uses all his talents as a theatre student to keep his real emotions hidden. His eyes are a pale shade of olive green, and when he's up to something they hold an tell-tale mischievous sparkle that his team have learnt to recognise. He keeps his brown hair in a simple style that can be kept neat and tidy or spiked up depending on the situation.
He has broad shoulders, a long stride and a slender yet muscular body. Charlie is someone who keeps a close eye on his physical fitness and appearance. He is what could be called a 'modern man', and is not afraid of using cosmetics and products to achieve the look he wants. As the con artist of his team Charlie takes his looks seriously, and has a wide range of outfits. It has gotten him a lot of teasing in the past, especially from his team, but they all know that it is just Charlie taking his job seriously.
Personality
Above all Charlie is an actor, a con artist and a fake, both professionally and personally. He rarely lets people see the true him, and sometimes not even his team understand his true intentions. Underneath his cheery warm exterior, the joker is actually a brooding older brother who still has no idea what happened to his sister. He has been all over the country in the last few years and he still hasn't heard anything about Mary-Ann. He still feels like he failed his sister, and every time one of his team gets hurt or killed he is reminded of that failure. Charlie is very protective of his team, and determined to have everything done by the book. There are particular procedures and codes of behaviour he expects his team to follow, and when someone doesn't he does lose his temper. His anger stems from his concern for them, and his fear of losing them just because they were too lazy to do something properly.
The impression most people get of Charlie is that he's a social person, or a ladies man. Most of the time Charlie is 'working', and has a reason for being so social or for flirting with a woman. His team are his close friends, and outside of them he doesn't have any long term relationships with other people. Hunting is just one of the reasons why he doesn't seek relationships outside his team. The other is that he doesn't trust people, even if he knows for sure they are human. He's come across humans before who are controlled by or work for vampires, so he knows that a person's species isn't a sign that they are trustworthy.
Talents & Weaknesses
Charlie's degree is one of the few things about him that isn't a part of a facade. He is a brilliant actor who can portray a range of characters, and moods, and he has been in many small productions. He understands the technical side of acting and theatre, and does just as well in the written side of subject. His interest in theatre does not stretch into other arts. Charlie has no talent with art, and can not sing or play a musical note in tune. He is also not very academically minded when it comes to science or mathematics, and tends to rely on other members of his team for these skills. He has studied some parts of psychology though as a way of reading and understanding people better.
As leader of his team Charlie has the strength and courage to do what is needed, to make hard decisions, and to handle the back lash from his hunters when they disagree with him. He also has a talent for identifying people’s strengths, and helps bring them fruition. Each member of his group has a role to play, and this can be seen as a strength and a weakness in his leadership. It strengthens the team by provided the group with a specialist in different areas, but it also means that he often relies one person to do a specific task. Although Charlie has done his best to hone his own talents, he does leave certain things to other members of his team instead of attempting them himself. This can leave him to be reliant on a lot of other people at times.
Charlie has been trained in how to track and identify supernatural creatures. He has developed an eye for identifying circumstances that may be due to the supernatural rather than normal crime. Charlie has spent a lot of time around people and has a range of social skills. He can get information out of a stone without resorting to violence or black mail. However, if he needs to resort to either of those he is quite capable of doing so. He is trained in Ju-jitsu, and regularly spars with other people to keep his instincts toned. He can use a wide range of weapons, although he prefers blades, especially those that can easily be hidden. Charlie has tortured supernatural creatures before, and isn't scared of doing if it's needed. He draws the line though at torturing innocent people caught up in the mess, even if they may know something that can help. In these cases he uses personal information he has found out about them through his social connections and uses it against them.
